I plan to write my analytical research paper based on episode two of Angel, “Lonely Hearts.” By that I mean, I plan to write about the underlying theme in the episode. In “Lonely Hearts” I feel the writers were trying to say that there are a lot of bad people in the world and that there would be a lot less victims if we were a little more selective with whom we chose to trust. I think that this is especially true for the younger generations, like college students, for example.
I feel like my generation thinks, “It will never happen to me.” Then, when it does we are all shocked and upset by it. Maybe if we were better educated on what has happened in the past we wouldn’t continue to make the same mistakes. Therefore, I would like to put together a piece that explains the dangers of the real world; especially the bar scene. I could look up select circumstances that have been well documented about crimes and statistics of rape, abuse, or even murder. This way, people can understand that things like that happened more often than they think. Then, once they realize this is the reality of the world we live in, I would like to research prevention methods. This way people can go out with a piece of mind and not be blindsided by some creep.
My research question will be: What makes this world such a dangerous place, and is there anything we can do?
My thesis statement is: We would be a lot safer if we were educated on the dangers of the world and how to prevent them.
You seem to be saying that through "Lonely Hearts", the writers of Angel are arguing that the world is ridden with an array of untrustworthy people who would take advantage of you at the drop of a hat. However it's may be more powerful to look at it as people needing to be more careful when we forge connections with people. The main evidence for this argument seems to be the demon in disguise from the episode. The argument is timely because life never stops. We never stop connecting with people, and people always have to be careful, and stop being so nieve. Have you thought about connecting this argument to John and Lorena Bobbit story from the 90's. I see the two stories connected because they were a married couple and John got drunk and raped Lorena, so Lorena cut off his manhood. Rather "demonic" acts I'd say. I think analyzing this episode and the Joan and Lorena Bobbit case together could be fruitful because they fit together in correlation, and there is a multitude of information available about this case that received world wide attention.
ReplyDeleteI feel like you have a good idea and that you have plenty to talk about.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the world is a dangerous place and prudence is probably the best guide to get you around. I think a research on how to be safe is vital so that high schoolers can be taught to stay safe.
ReplyDeleteVery good idea to consider. We have to careful who we trust, because they might not have the best intentions towards us.
