The first episode, “City of” of Angel is like the first episode of any show. They give you some background and introduce the who, what, when, and where. The main characters are Angel: the vampire with a soul, Doyle: the half human half demon, and Cordelia: the all human want to be actress. For those of us that didn’t watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Cordelia both carried over from that show.
Being a vampire, Angel is immortal and has been around the world wreaking havoc for hundreds of years. However, what sets him apart from all the rest is that he was cursed by gypsies. Cursed with a soul. Because of this Angel is overwhelmed with regret for all the lives he has taken or ruined. This sets the basis for the entire series. Angel is set in modern day Los Angeles, California, mostly in an old hotel that he lives and runs his business out of. The only time he really leaves is at night to go kill bad guys or if necessary during the day through the sewers.
Now that I’ve shared the basics and some background I’ll discuss something a little deeper. Angel’s character is very complex. As any hundred-some year old being would be. He feels an overpowering desire to seek redemption. Which begs the question, who is he trying to prove himself to? Himself? A higher power? While all other vampires are soulless beings and go straight to hell does Angel somehow have a chance to redeem himself and not be just another hellbound vampire? Only time will tell.
