Today I chose to read The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety’s 2009 Annual Campus Security Report. I chose this as a potential source because in my paper I would like to focus in on college students rather than the general population. I thought it best to start at home and then compare the results with other universities around the country.
After reading the report I found some good information. First of all, the mere fact that our university, as well as other universities, has a department of public safety says a lot. It means that safety is a big issue. Here is a quote from the report, “Your safety is our concern. It also must be your concern. As a university, we work very hard to prevent crime, fire, accidents and illness, but nothing we do is as important as what you do – and, in some cases, don’t do” (Department of Public Safety). This quote says it all. While they are here to protect us, we must also protect ourselves.
Another great thing about this article is the charts. The charts show crime statistics from 2007, 2008, and 2009. The report has a lot of helpful information. It explains the measures they go to, to keep us safe. It also provides you with contact information for various places to call depending on your emergency as well as some phone numbers for resources that are available to help those in need. The report also contains some helpful tips for keeping yourself from falling victim to crime. This is all information that I plan on using in my paper. It basically encompasses all the information I want to cover in one source.
